Seen and Sewn Together Blog Tour

I’m Claire of Claire_Crafted. I’m an avid sewist – but only in the free time I have after my day job (health policy work) and spending time with my husband and toddler.

Arielle from Seen & Sewn Patterns graciously allowed me to participate with the hack I did of the Aspen Tank pattern.

The pattern is super simple, so it left lots of room for creativity – which is exciting but can sometimes be overwhelming at the same time!

Ultimately, I decided that the pink clay linen I bought from Stone Mountain and Daughter Fabrics went perfectly with the adorable cotton raccoon fabric I bought at the Denver quilt show last spring. I also only had one yard of it, so the size of the yoke was perfect.

Once I picked out the fabrics, I had to decide how I wanted to hack the pattern. Again, it’s a very straightforward pattern, so that left a lot of possibilities!

As I contemplated the options, I realized that the popover placket Kalle Shirt pattern from Closet Case was a) perfect for combining with this pattern and b) one of my favorite sews to date (I love topstitching!).

Modifying the two to fit together was a simple process. I cut out the Aspen Tank per the instructions it came with. I still had leftover raccoon fabric, and I felt that would be the best fabric for a contrasting placket. I cut out the full placket, but I figured it might be a bit long so I would adjust later.

From there, I followed the instructions for the Aspen Tank – except I did not apply the bias tape around the collar until the end. After I pieced together the top parts and attached the bottom, that’s where I diverged a bit from the instructions.

I placed the placket cutout onto the top front of the blouse and quickly realized that it was too long. So I cut off about an inch at the top (I more or less eyeballed it to see what would look best bleeding over into the linen). From there, I pulled out the Kalle Shirt instructions for attaching the placket.

Once the placket was attached, I finished off the collar with the bias tape and attached the buttons – which I found at Trim 2000 Plus in the LA fabric district. Hemmed it up and it was finished!

This was also one of the first makes I got to use my adorable Claire_Crafted labels from Dutch Label Shop. The gray with white contrasting thread I chose for the design worked perfectly.

Thanks again, Arielle, for allowing me to participate!

Athens and artichokes

Today I am grateful to live in Athens. ITs a small community but a great one. One where little ol me can get into the newspaper twice in one year. I'm not too excited about the photo they chose of me but there was no caption so hopefully the banner herald readers will not know it was me. http://onlineathens.com/stories/080210/liv_689380630.shtml Tonight Lindsay Will and I made paneer spinach and artichokes that we dipped in butter and bernaise. So delicious. And very round: Toby was quite jealous. He had a few leftovers, though. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone Location: Normal Ave,Athens-Clarke County,United States

Risotto and Sonny Perdue

Today I am grateful that I woke up to Noel kissing me on the cheek as he was leaving. Today Sarah, Cheryl and I went to the ribbon cutting of the MCG/UGA Medical School Partnership. It was not as much hot as it was extremely humid...and I immediately drenched the dress that Julie gave me. I have never gotten so many comments about a dress before. I am grateful to Julie for giving me some great new clothes. My whole outfit today cost about 5 dollars. That doesn't count the underwear...but you can't count that because underwear is expensive. I love this great dress that Julie gave me, bottom line. This is a photo of Cheryl and I fake cutting the ribbon before the actual ribbon cutting.  I know my posts always involve food...but I love to cook. I found this recipe in a magazine and it was all about green food. Recipes for zucchini, pea soup and then this one were in the article.  Who can resist a big helping of spinach and goat cheese risotto made with vegetable stock and...

Omikse Campers come to the Trading Post for their mail!

Today, I am grateful to have a best friend in my sister. Today, of all days, I needed her. I needed her not only to answer the phone when I called, but to actually predict that I would walk into my apartment to find yet another ticket from the DC Police for my car. She must have predicted that, because she assured that my incredible care package would arrive on the exact same day that I would break into tears because I'm so tired of paying for things related to my car. Let me just leave it at that with the car because this is a place in my life where I only focus on the positive. What am I grateful for. Just to give a little more background, I'm guessing most of us can relate to receiving care packages at camp. My mom used to surprise me with them. I never knew when I would get one. And, when they arrived, they were incredible. But, what I always loved the most were her letters. She would write more than a card--a story! A story that detailed the lives of my siblings ...
